SEGMENT
FIVE - SINGAPORE TO DUBAI |
|
March 14, 2005 Leaving
Penang - Going to be a wedding onboard |
We left Penang,
Maylasia and are on our way to India. Yesterday we (successfully)
went into town to a huge big shopping mall to shop for a wedding
gift for Amy and Greg. Amy is an entertainer (a real cute redhead
with a terrific voice) who is in charge of the music for the PG
singers. Greg is the sports director who runs all the games. They
make such a cute couple! Anyway, they are getting married tomorrow
on the front of Deck 6 at 5:30pm. Of course Capt. Dag will marry
them. Jamie, the Cruise Director will be giving her away. Everyone
on board received a wedding invitation so this is so exciting! They
have a reception following. My girlfriend from NY, Lynn, has Amy’s
beautiful wedding dress hanging in their closet (they have a
penthouse suite so lots of room). Both Amy and Greg are so nice…this
will be a wonderful day!
Day before yesterday we spent almost the entire day walking around
Singapore. It is a very nice, very clean, ultra modern, safe
“Western feeling” city. After the ports we’ve visited recently, it
almost seemed too sterile without the character of Vietnam or
Shanghi. It really is a nice city! Of course as we all know, you
have to really watch your p’s and q’s in Singapore or face large
($1,000) fines for things like jay walking, littering, smoking in
the wrong place (ironically, like all of Asia, there are a lot of
smokers here). I got my hair shampooed/blow dry for $10 while Tom
got an hour massage for $25.
Doug and Lynn Burns are now onboard and in #831 which is directly
above our cabin. It was fun talking to them from our respective
balconies as we were sailing into Penang. I’ve also met Marianne and
Gary Hart (“greenflash” is her screen name though she rarely posts)
in the Voyager Lounge. She recognized me and tapped my shoulder a
couple of nights ago. Last night I stayed up talking to Doug, Lynn
and Marianne in the Voyager lounge. Doug and Lynn are great dancers!
We will have 3 sea days before we arrive in Cochin, India on Friday.
Lots of new passengers boarded in Singapore….. Everything continues
to be going great. I’ll report back about the wedding and maybe have
some photos of the beautiful bride and groom!
While we were
in Singapore day before yesterday, Rosanne came onboard. Rosanne and
her husband Victor are the couple who were suppose to get off in LA
but continued on for 2 more segments and finally had to get off in
Sydney. Roseanne had business in Hong Kong so changed planes in
Singapore PURPOSELY allowing her to come on the Voyager for 4 hours.
I was so sad that I missed her while we spent the day in Singapore.
Paul spent the afternoon with her and gave me a great photo of them
together at the pool bar. DANG...missed her by 10 minutes!
Also, Paul is the BEST...he surprised me with a little golden cat
that waves his paw up and down (battery operated). It's adoreable.
Our cabin looks great with lots of new world cruise pets I've picked
up along the way!

March 16, 2005 - The
Wedding |
Amy and Greg’s
sunset wedding last night was perfect in every way! After a hot day,
the weather had cooled down enough to make it very pleasant. A half
hour before the wedding began guests gathered on the front of deck
6, some guests in front of the bridge and some stood inside the
bridge. There were beautiful songs sang by the 4 singers and the
Voyager quintet. As the ceremony began, Capt. Dag, Greg and his 2
groomsmen stood at the very front of the ship. Our Cruise Director,
Jamie walked Amy in. WOW! Amy was such a beautiful bride! She’s so
pretty anyway and had a magnificent dress that only “skinny” Amy
could wear so well! The ceremony was very touching with songs sang
between taking their vows. It was such a beautiful setting with the
ocean and sunset.... and oh so romantic! As the newlyweds departed
the bow we all threw rose petals.
There was a champagne flowing reception in the atrium that was lots
of fun. Amy tossed the bouquet and her maid of honor (a dancer,
Claire) caught it. Greg pulled off Amy’s garter with his teeth and
threw it to the single men. (Paul made very little attempt to catch
it!) It was caught by Greg’s best man (another dancer, Demitri).
Ironically, Claire and Demitri have been dating for 5 years….do you
think the fix was in? Hey, maybe another wedding on next year’s
World Cruise....?? You never know! Toasts were made, the cake was
cut etc. Amy and Greg thanked everyone for attending, individual
thanks to several, and a big thanks to Radisson for making it all
possible. Since it was not possible for Amy and Greg to leave in a
limo as is often done, their mode of transportation were 2 motorized
wheel chairs! Everyone was in stitches as they took a “victory lap”
around the atrium. What a hoot!!!
After the reception all the guests went into Compass Rose for
dinner. I’ve never seen the CR so crowded. It was such a fun evening
with lots of the traditional glass clinking where the bride and
groom kiss. We were invited to eat at a fun table for 8 with 2 of
the gorgeous entertainer dancers we’ve become good friends with
(Kerrie and Laura). Many of the guests had the fresh tuna caught
earlier that day. They all raved about it! Dessert options included,
of course, wedding cake..YUM!
Tom and I called it a day about midnight after partying in the
Voyager Lounge with the bride & groom, wedding party, friends (Doug
and Lynn Burns were dancing the night away...and yes, they sure give
Tom and I a run for the money LOL).
It was such a special day…..PERFECT in every way! Just when I say it
can’t get any better….it DOES!

March 21, 2005 - Leaving India |
Well we’re
currently in the Arabian Sea on our way to Dubai. All I can say
about India is….seeing is
believing….WOW!
I had some preconceived ideas since Tom lived/worked there for about
5 months in 1993 but it was more than words can describe. I can see
why some love it and others hate it. It has it all! I’ve been to
many 3rd world countries before but this takes the cake. There is
lots of beauty yet such poverty everywhere! I’m happy I was able to
experience 4 cities in India (Cochin, Goa, Mumbai, and Agra).
Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is certainly full of hustle/bustle. It has
so much poverty and is SO over populated! (although Tom says that
Calcutta is worse yet, maybe Delhi too). I saw the shanties where
millions live, I saw people living in cardboard boxes on the side of
the street, I saw people squatting on the sidewalks to perform
bodily functions, I saw cows blocking traffic, I saw the total
congestion. I also saw Agra with the unbelievable Taj Mahal. We
stayed at the nicest hotel I’ve ever stayed in (The Amarvilas)….some
of our group said it was nicer than the Taj (LOL). We had a
beautiful suite with a 300 sq. ft. balcony and a HEAD-ON view of the
Taj Mahal.. The grounds at this hotel were spectacular! There was
even a monkey that lived on the grounds that chases off the other
monkeys. He was so adorable and tame. He loved to pat his head and
shake hands with the guests.
Radisson did a very good job considering there were a total of 170
people on this excursion. Getting to the Mombai airport was
challenging to say the least. We were on a bus that must have been
50 years old and showed every mile of its use. We weren’t even sure
it would make it to the airport. As they say in India, in order to
drive here you need 3 things: good brakes, good horn and good luck!
Once at the Mombai airport there was some chaos and confusion (the
usual airport hassle) but nothing we couldn’t live with. The 1 hour
flight itself was very nice. We were on a very new chartered jet
with an excellent lunch served. Upon our arrival in Agra, everything
was very organized with the busses and an easier drive than in
Mombai. Other than the cows, camels, water buffalo, donkeys which
can obstruct the traffic…it was all fine. Upon arrival at The
Amarvilas Hotel there were lots of oohs and aahs. It was
breathtaking. Not all the rooms were as nice as ours, we sure lucked
out with a prize room. I roomed with a girlfriend here on the ship,
Jane. We were perfect room mates! Tom didn’t go since he had been
there before in 1993 but I’m so glad he encouraged me (almost
insisted) I go. I wouldn’t trade this for anything. Actually, I
wouldn’t trade seeing India for anything! Will I ever return,
maybe…maybe not but there aren’t words to describe it. It can be
very disturbing so you need to be prepared (as I was) for what
you’ll see. It is a real experience!
As for the Taj Mahal, I took lots of photos but as I’ve said so many
times before, the photos don’t do justice to such a magnificent
structure. If you decide to look at the photos, please pay attention
to those that show the people at the base so you can appreciate the
giganticness of this wonder of the world. We had wonderful food at
the hotel, shopped amongst the street people and did lots of
bargaining as the Asians love to do. I even found time to get a
wonderful massage at the hotel. The hotel dinner, breakfast and
lunch was very good…much better than I was expecting.
Coming back to Mombai was much easier and upon arriving at the
airport just walked on to the busses. The drive back to the ship was
another real challenge and some found it difficult to look out the
windows. We saw terrible conditions that I will never forget.
Upon reaching the Voyager, I had a special treat! Tom had walked out
to the entry point where the busses stopped and was there to welcome
us back. He had a good two days while I was away. He went to theTaj
Mahal Hotel in Mumbai (funny coincidence huh) to check out where he
lived for so many months. He also spent an afternoon with several
top officers on the Voyager who he’s become friends with… shopping,
eating lunch in the city, buying some new carpets for the ship and a
trip to a jewelry store. I’m sure glad they went to this store….he
surprised me with the most beautiful sapphire and diamond bracelet.
It really is gorgeous. I was so surprised. It’s nice to be missed! I
can’t imagine what I would have received if I were away 2 nights!
hehe.
my new bracelet
It was such a great excursion….I highly recommend anyone coming to
India on a cruise to make the side trip to Agra to see the Taj
Mahal. Hopefully if you do, Radisson will be using the same
magnificent hotel we stayed in as well.
Last night as we sailed away, the Indian people were once again
waving to us from the docks. They are very friendly. We passed by
the QE2 which was waiting for our berth. Apparently, they had
arrived earlier than expected and had sat out at sea for most of the
day waiting for our departure. We did the “horn honking” back and
forth that Capt. Dag is so good at. FUN! The QE2 has special meaning
to me as this is the ship my parents sailed around the world in (or
darn close to it) in the 1970’s. It sure looked beautiful…a grand
old lady!
I took more photos in India than any other country we’ve visited.
I’ll share many of them to try to give a representation of what we
saw. I will leave out photos from Cochin and Goa and just show you
ones from Mombai and Agra. Too many pictures!
Reading through this, I don’t mean to give you the impression that I
would never return to India, I would. There are just a handful of
places we’ve visited that I have no desire to ever return to such as
Tahiti, MaDang and Nuka Hiva.
Here are some photos (the good with the sad):

Well….I found
out where the money is…., in Dubai. It is the 3rd highest oil
producing country. They sure rolled out the red carpet for us
(literally) and had Arab bagpipe players and dancers. This city is
magnificent and such a huge contrast to India (our last country
visited). I guess I was thinking I would see lots of sand and
camels. Not so! In fact I only saw one camel on the side of the
road. Instead you see a safe, pristine city and so modern and new.
(It is ranked one of the safest cities in the world). The homes,
skyscrapers and highways are beautiful and everything is so new. I
was surprised to see lots of Chevrolets on the roads. It is the
Singapore of the Middle East, so modern yet still holds that Arabic
mystic. Most of the United Arab Emirates people are Muslims which is
prevalent through out with women wearing flowing robes and burkes.
This port stop might be the biggest surprise to me (and many).
Everyone onboard is raving about this city. The city reeks of MONEY!
Yesterday Tom and I went into the town and visited a huge mall
(called a “souk”) and I see why this city is called “The City of
Gold”. There are thousands of jewelry stores selling 22 carat gold
and this is their passion. This is quite a city for shopping; I
bought small things but no jewelry. Although the national language
is Arabic, most everyone speaks English so no problem anywhere. US
$$ are widely accepted so no need to exchange currency. I understand
that one of the Voyager ladies purchased a 10 carat diamond ring. I
can’t wait to see that!
At 5:30 we left the ship to go on our World Cruise complimentary
excursion to the reception at the.
Burj Al Arab In case you’re not familiar with this hotel, it is
ranked #1 in the WORLD. It would be like turning Versailles into a
hotel. It is build on a manmade island and to get there you cross a
small causeway. It is shaped like a huge sail and towers 1053 feet
high. It is so futuristic and luxurious. It has a Las Vegas
grandiose feel to it but more spectacular than anything in LV. It is
dripping in gold, silk fabrics, vibrant colors, and beautiful
flowers. There are also shops which I’m sure are out of sight. There
are only 202 suites but each one is a 2 story townhouse style. The
prices range from about $1,100 to $7,000 USD per night. We were
fortunate to be able to visit a room. We had made friends with a fun
couple from Australia who were only on for 1 segment. They did a
Radisson post cruise package at the Burj Al Arab and invited us to
their room. Jamie (cruise director) and his wife Dana (social
hostess) came with us to their room. Each floor has their own
concierge, each suite has its own butler and every imaginable tech
feature with laptops, internets, plasma TVs, automated everything
and a VIEW to die for!! I’m guessing the square feet of their suite
was over 3,000 sq. ft. Downstairs is a study area, huge living room,
powder room and large entry. There is a wide circular staircase
going up stairs with a laser clock on the wall. On the upper floor
is the master bath, a large dressing room and a bedroom that is
huge! There are mirrors over the bed, separate sitting area with
chairs and couches. One whole wall is glass to capture the view. You
could easily entertain 25+ guests in your suite with no problem
whatsoever. The mini bar charges $11 for a beer….a hamburger lunch
at this hotel runs over $100 per person. If you are not a hotel
guest and just want to walk around the hotel you must pay $30 entry
fee. They have a strict dress code inorder to enter as well.
After touring our friend’s hotel room, we went up to the 26th floor
for the Radisson function. It was very nice with champagne, wines
and finger food. We all enjoyed this complimentary function so much.
Capt. Dag was cute and said “please don’t expect all excursions to
compare to this”. How True! Radisson did a tremendous job of pulling
this together without any glitches. I tried to take photos but there
is so much “glittery effects” that it tricked my flash and some of
my photos just look like a fire cracker going off. There is a
beautiful fountain outside that has a fire/water dancing effect.
They also have a dancing fountain inside which was fun to watch.
Going up the escalator there is a floor to ceiling aquarium with
illuminating fish. There is one on the opposite wall when coming
down that escalator as well.
After our Burj Al Arab party, 8 of us went to a local restaurant to
eat. We ate at 8:30pm (on the late side for us) but the locals don’t
come into eat until around 10:00pm! The food and service was
impeccable and the price was so reasonable, about $15 a person
including soups, salads and appetizers and a 20% tip! There was no
liquor served. Other friends went to the Hyatt for dinner and they
did serve liquor there. Doug and Lynn Burns went on an excursion
called “Dinner in the Dunes” and raved about it as well! They took a
dune buggy to get there.
We keep moving our clocks back an hour and now we’re only 12 hours
ahead of California. Lots of new passengers boarded yesterday, I
sure wish Ngaire and Ken could have joined us. They would love it
here! I’m so glad we were able to overnight there. We are now on our
way to Oman, which is also supposed to be another favorite.
Anyway, as you can see….we LOVE Dubai! It's warm (no humidity)
perfect weather! The water is a wonderful greenish color like Bora
Bora.
Here are some photos of Dubai (there was so much I didn’t
photograph):

March 27, 2005 - Surprise Party on
the Voyager |
Today we had a
special surprise party on the Voyager. Today was Marc and Harry’s 40
year anniversary of being together. Another friend, Joan and I put
together a nice private party for about 40 guests up on the
Starboard side of La Veranda. We knew that Marc and Harry come up
for breakfast every morning around 9:00am so we decided to have a
surprise party in their honor. We made invitations and Radisson, as
always, did a wonderful job of putting the details together
including champagne, balloons, decorations and a darling huge bunny
cake since today is Easter.
A couple of nights ago all the passengers received long Muslim gowns
in our cabins, what a surprise and so appropriate since we’re in the
Middle East. The woman received darker colors and the men with
custom received light colored. We decided to have party guest have
their heads covered and wear as much jewelry as possible (after all
Marc and Harry are the “Kings of Bling”). Most came in their gowns
or at least had their heads covered. Some went all out (like my
husband!). Anyway, we all had a fun Easter morning and Marc and
Harry were surprised beyond belief.
Yesterday we were in Muscat, Oman. This town was another real
winner! We visited the most beautiful site….the Grand Mosque. This
is right up there with the beautiful cathedrals of Europe, actually
even better. I felt like I was back at the Taj Mahal.
Last night each cabin received an Easter surprise of chocolate
bunnies, colored eggs and jelly beans. The spread at afternoon tea
today was a real Easter chocolate delight! Tonight we have a very
special Easter treat….we’re eating with Captain Dag for the first
time.
Happy Easter to all!
Here are a couple of photos from Muscat and some from the surprise
party this morning. Just want to make sure you all feel the same
excitement we experience on a daily basis!

night in Compass Rose:
